![]() Pages 21- 24 are just flat out gorgeous for the amount of detail in the crowds, the setting, and the emotion from the characters. It’s impossible not to have that sound echo through one’s head given how the panels are illustrated. Again, Sakai shows he can create fluid movement, now with tension, on. The reaction by the character in the third panel on 15 made me smile when this character laughs or smiles it’s contagious. In fact, the final panel on the page is laugh out loud funny. Were the visuals not strong, this situation would have no humor. There’s an action sequence on 13 that’s very funny given a reaction by a character. Special note should also be taken by Sakai fans of a tiny doll in the bottom right who is missing his companion. The individual that lives here is an intricately detailed outfit that is also worthy of a “Wow” or two. Pages 8 and 9 have a partial double-paged spread that makes Usagi go “Wow,” and it will make the reader do so as well! This is a gorgeously detailed setting that’s got something interesting in every corner. The bottom of 6 and the top of 7 also have some wonderful movement, with on character vehement in what he wants, while another changes his tune upon recognizing someone. This book is absolutely set in a real world. When Usagi and Ishida take to the streets the settings are amazing: believable structures as far as the eye can see and populated by a wide variety of characters that one would expect to see at this point in time. And look at those first three panels on : Sakai gives some excellent animation to both characters. The slam on the table that ends the second page is a terrific reinforcement of one character’s mood that is restated at the top of the third page. The next two pages show the protagonists’ back and forth with this unsavory character. The linework that shows the wooden tables, the dirt floor, and the curtains is wonderful. The bottom panel on the first page introduces Usagi and Ishida to the reader, as well as the setting and their proximity to the thief. He’s given a comical look of shock, but as the story progresses this individual is shown to have more than one face. The issue begins with an intense close-up of the thief. The art: Stan Sakai, the artist, continues to be brilliant in every possible way. Mystery, adventure, heroes, villains, and humor make this perfect storytelling. The pair of protagonists go into an establishment in search of someone and a strong action sequence follows. This moment of humor gives way to a return to the book’s antagonists who make some dark plans. Pages 14 and 15 have a very funny moment that creates a nice bit of clever action from the title character with a response from one character absolutely delightful. What occurs there reveals this new character clearly to the reader and characters, moves the mystery along further, and shows another underworld entity in the city. Stan Sakai’s mystery continues to be revealed by these sleuths with them journeying to a lead that Ishida is familiar with: Kin the Fence. “ Information first!” The thief then reveals that shogunate officials are looking for a “small box of foreign make that one of them was carrying.” The two detectives leave the thief to his money, discussing the box. He feigns ingnorance, “My mind has been in a such a fog lately.” Reaching into his robe, the inspector produces two chits and places them on the table, which the thief immediately reaches for until Usagi puts his hand on them. He’s asked about the two samurai who were killed in the warehouse district the previous night. The story: The third installment of this issue begins with a thief being questioned by Usagi and Ishida. When don’t these pair of artists deliver the goods? Overall grade: A+ USAGI YOJIMBO STATUE SKINUsagi’s robe and Ishida’s skin stand out upon a light tan background, while the statue stands out in very light browns. The statue is upon a pedestal and looks directly at the reader as if compelling him or her to understand a silent message. Ishida looks to his left and spies a beautiful statue of woman in a flowing dress holding flowers. Moving to the left are Usagi and Inspector Ishida, with the ronin reaching for one of his blades and the inspector holding his jitte’ high so all know that he is on the shogun’s business. The cover: Stan Sakai and Tom Luth have created a cover in contrasts. ![]() ![]() Also seems to have a "selection" system to display more sound effect details at the top of the screen.ĭisplays icons giving the paths, destinations, and orientations of entities in the world. This was seen as a slightly touristy and embarrassing thing to do, so my then (native) boyfriend left me to it and made a detour to the newly opened McDonald’s to buy multiple “cheeseburgery” (another word that cheered me greatly) to take on the 10-hour train journey back to St Petersburg, so that people at home could try this great delicacy. It took a while for me to acquire enough language to get to it, but eventually I did.Īt the end of that year, just before I was due to go back home for my final year at university, I made a pilgrimage to Bulgakov’s flat in Moscow. I figured that if this was a country where this was everyone’s favourite book, then underneath all the suspicion and misunderstandings and the accusations of being a Latvian and the constant demands for information about the Beatles (“Or maybe you prefer King Crimson?”), there must be a properly beating heart. More importantly, I was buoyed up by the book’s sense of humour, mixed with the outlandishly fantastical. I also read it as representing the mental state necessary for surviving in the Soviet Union: you can have some kind of inner peace in your internal life but you’re never quite off the hook. The controversial and much-analysed conclusion to the novel is about the Master and Margarita being granted “peace” but not “light”. #Master and margarita how to#I read it as a book about how to go on living when your spirit is broken. Simultaneously – because the narrative flits between two stories – Pontius Pilate condemns Christ to death in Jerusalem. In the novel the devil and his retinue (which includes a wall-eyed loon and a talking cat) manipulate “the Master”, a writer, and Margarita, his muse. Reading Bulgakov’s satire of 1930s Stalinist Moscow helped me to see just how easy it is to mess up a nation psychologically. It’s strange to think that many of the people I knew then – who never believed they would own a passport – now live abroad. I would frequently encounter people who had never met a foreigner before and genuinely did not believe they would meet one in their lifetime. It was common for people to insist I must be Latvian, as they were so freaked out by the idea of meeting someone from England. But essentially St Petersburg was much as it had been for the previous 30 years. In 1993, during the Yeltsin era, things were changing fast. Just knowing the book at all felt like finding the key to a secret world. They were glad I was reading the book (it was then and is now the favourite book of most Russians) but highly suspicious of the idea that it could possibly be the same book in bourgeois English. So it’s pointless to make out that anyone is “missing something” by reading a book in translation.Īll this is to say that I had to endure many stunted conversations (remember, I could not really speak Russian at this point) with Russians violently berating me for not reading Master i Margarita in the original. No matter how fluently you know a language, you will never read a book in the way a native speaker will read it. At the end of the year I could read the language but by then I had come to the conclusion that people who make out that “literature is so much better in the original” are just idiots who want you to know how clever they are to have mastered a language. At this point I was nowhere near able to start a book in Russian, let alone finish one. I read it in translation, a Harvill Secker paperback with a picture on the cover of the graffitied stairwell of the Moscow block where Bulgakov lived. These are the desperately pathetic but so important little moments in life that make you think: “Maybe I can do this very difficult thing after all.” #Master and margarita cracked#(To give you some idea of what a big deal this was, Crime and Punishment is Prestupleniye i Nakazaniye.) Soon afterwards I discovered the Russian word for picnic was “piknik” and felt as if I had cracked the Enigma code. I now realise I was probably drawn to The Master and Margarita because its title is virtually the same in Russian as it is in English (“Master i Margarita”) and it gave me a boost that finally I could understand a book title without thinking about it. And that I really wanted to be able to talk to the people for whom this book was everything and to try to understand something about their lives. This book made me realise I was not going to give up. I was teaching English (very badly), barely coping with temperatures of -15C and fighting a losing battle with the Russian language. W hen I first heard of Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita it was 1993 and I was living in St Petersburg during my university year abroad. ![]() ![]()
